Knock Novena Homily 2011

The Raphoe Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock Shrine took place on Saturday 20th August.

The Theme of the Novena is Faith Providence Action.  Here is the text of Bishop Boyce's homily:

To Trust in God

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace” (Heb. 4:16).

The word of the Lord urges us to place our trust in God, not in the brittle supports of created things on earth. People have always been tempted to rely on some visible and profitable reality. To us, it seems at times to be a step too far to place our confidence in Him whom we know only through faith. It was a test failed by Adam and Eve when they were asked not to taste of the fruit of the tree of Good and Evil. Relying on their own wisdom, and abetted by the false promises of the Evil One, they put their trust in a created gain rather then in the power of the all-wise Creator.

Chrism Mass Homily 2011

Chrism Mass Homily 2011

Bishop Philip Boyce, OCD

St Eunan's Cathedral, Letterkenny

Today reminds us of the first Holy Thursday, the day before Christ laid down his life to save us and make us his friends. Despite the foreboding atmosphere that surrounded the little group of disciples, Jesus began to prepare for the celebration of the Paschal Feast. He gathered his chosen twelve apostles into an Upper Room in Jerusalem, and gave his Church the gifts of the Holy Eucharist and of the ordained priesthood.

Ordination to the Priesthood of Rev Damian McGroarty

Ordination of Damian Mc Groarty to the Priesthood

St. Eunan’s Cathedral 4th July 2010

by Most Rev Philip Boyce OCD

Bishop of Raphoe

“Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house’” (Lk 10:5).

The Lord spoke these words to his disciples as He sent them out before him to prepare for his own coming. They were able to bring with them the gift of peace because they proclaimed that “the kingdom of God is very near you.” And St. Paul tells us that this kingdom “is peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Rom. 14:17). True peace arises from God’s presence. It comes from within us. The priest’s words: “Peace be with you” are more than a simple greeting. They are a divine blessing bringing light, healing, inner strength and salvation. Those who accept this blessing into their lives are freed from what is sinful and evil; they live in peace with God, with others and with themselves.

Homily at Knock for the Visit of the Relics of the Curé of Ars

Homily at Knock for the Visit of the Relics of the Curé of Ars

27 April 2010

Since June 2009 we have been living in what Pope Benedict XVI inaugurated as a “Year for Priests”. It has given rise to much prayer to God for the faithfulness, interior renewal and holiness of priests. Yet this year has been marked with the revelation of the scandalous sins and crimes of those whose hands were anointed for a sacred service but who betrayed the trust placed in them by innocent children. Instead of leading them to God, they led them astray and ruined their lives. As the prophet Daniel laments and prays: “To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us confusion of face...To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness because we have rebelled against him, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by following his laws… O Lord hear; O Lord forgive; O Lord give heed and act.” (Daniel 9: 1,9-10.19)
